Cold Weather+Natural Hair=Protective Styles

Here in Western PA, we have went from sunny 60 degrees to a balmy 39 degrees with flurries all within one week. But I am not complaining by any means because I love fall weather. Beyond all of the scarfs and falling leaves, I have to take extra care with my natural hair. My go to protective style is a wig. Yes, some naturals are like, I don't wear any type of wigs or weaves...I'm not that natural. My reasons for choosing wigs are simple: they work, allow me to take care of my hair under there, quick and easy.

I recently went crazy on blackhairsprays website and ordered about $70 in hair. One of the wigs that I purchased was a full cap wig named Cutie 15. Oh wait, let me just say that this wig was $17.99, not too bad. Underneath the wig I wore my hair in cornrows, moisturized with As I Am Doublebutter Cream (review to come at a later time), and a stocking cap. Wigs allows my hair and scalp underneath to breath and be oiled and moisturized whenever its needed.

As you can see the hair is a really nice texture, but its the typical full cap wig. The one thing that I wish is that this was a little fuller, track-wise. Honestly, its really thin when its worn out, which is the reason that I wore it up or in a ponytail most of the time. I wore it 2 weeks and it still looks like it did when I first started wearing it. For the price and the purpose, it worked for me. But there are times when I don't feel like myself.

I am thinking about making a protective styles calendar, so that I can plan out exactly what I am going to do during the colder months for my hair. Planning ahead will help me with saving money because I can stock up on hair and or products when there is a sale, and never say that I am bored or have nothing to do with my hair.

What are some of your protective styles during the cold weather?

See What Had Happened...

I know that a couple of weeks ago I posted that I was going to do a post on Senegalese Twists and the styles that I have done with them. Well, long story short, my twists are looking a little raggedy.

I am not sure if my hair is growing faster than I expected or what, but they are not looking 100% right now. I actaully had the styles planned out and experimenting with taking the pictures, but they just look nappy around the edges.

I have been trying several things to keep my edges under control, but aside from getting them redone, which costs $100, I'll just be dealing wiht it. I wanted to keep them in for 3 months, but I might be taking these out in more like two.

Thursday Tidbit...

A product thumbnail of MetaGrip Black Ponytail Hooks
Haven't done a tidbit Thursday in a while. Just something that I have discovered that makes putting this thick, kinky hair of mine in a ponytail easier than ever Ponytail Hooks. At first, I was so confused on how to use these, but after I got the hang of it, I love these thangs! You can find these ponytail hooks at your local Sally's.

Got questions? I can walk you through it...

Curls Unleashed Product Review

Today kicks off Beauty Week here on Walking Through Honey! As many of you know, and can tell by most of my posts, I really don't post much about products or reviews. This week I will be posting more beauty related posts.

Today, I will be giving an honest review on the Curls Unleashed Sulfate Free Shampoo and Moisturizing Conditioner.

Up first, The Sulfate-Free Shampoo. For the most part, I like this shampoo. I must admit that I am not really concerned with shampoos, but this one is better than other sulfate free shampoos that I have used. It smells good and cleans your hair well without stripping it. I normally shampoo my hair once, focusing mostly on the roots and then working my way down. I noticed that I really don't have to use alot of the product and I do get a good lather. Now on to the negatives...sigh...the price. I brought this from Sally's and it was $10! Its a shampoo, not a product filled with some extra ordinary ingredients. The products claims:

Lavish in the ultimate shampoo experience as your hair is gently cleansed, moisturized and detangles with lemon balm, rosemary and hops.
• Non-stripping
• Moisturizing
• Great Lather

Overall: I give it a 4 out of 5

The Moisturizing Conditioner, for me, is just average. The product states:

Curls Unleashed No Restrictions Moisturizing Conditioner is great to use for added moisture. This product is also great for transitioning, “co-washing,” detangling and conditioning.
• Moisturizes
• Detangles
• Can be used as a daily conditioner
• Prepares curls for styling

Ok, I am transitioning, almost natural. I most definitely wouldn't use this for a co-wash. But it does do a good job in detangeling, but the conditioning is just average. The one thing that I noticed was that I go through this conditioner fast! I used it three times and I am just about done with the jar. Not to mention, this stuff like the shampoo, was not cheap. If you want a conditioner, then go for this one. I wouldn't/couldn't see this being used as a deep conditioner, but maybe with heat it might be better.

Overall: I give it a 3 out of 5

Just as a disclaimer, I am not all into the whole 'all natural' products, no cons, has cons, slip, grip, stuff. So, I couldn't tell you if this is any of that. It says that it contains natural ingredients, but how much I couldn't tell you. I am just a novice starting out with the whole natural product bandwagon. The one thing that I do know is that I don't put much weight into the shampoo and conditioner that I use. To me, the deep conditioner, moisturizer, and oils are more important...but whatever works for your hair is always best.

Protect Ya Ends Challenge: Week 2 & 3...oh wait, and 4!

Just an update on week 2 and 3 and what I plan for week 4. For week 2, I washed my hair with Aveda Nourishing Shampoo (the verdict is still out on that), conditioned with Yes to Carrots to help with detangling, and then made some deep conditioner. It consisted of: Some Redken hair mask that I was trying to get rid of, some Aussie Moist, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Glycerin, and Honey. I let that sit on my hair for about 4 hours. I fell asleep, so it got some extra conditioning. I washed it out and added Giovanni Direct Leave-In. Then, I added Shea Moisture Curling Smoothie, sealed with coconut oil, and braided my hair up to go under the wig. I must admit that I am getting a little tired of the wig and hope that trying a bun will change things up.

The one thing that I am noticing that since I am focusing on ends, my scalp is dry. Because of this, I am starting to massage my scalp with oils a couple of times a week. I want to get some jojoba oil from Trader Joe's in the near future, but for now I'll be using coconut oil.
For week 3 and 4, I will be wearing a bun.
Here is the bun that I created following some YouTube videos. For week 4, I will be using different hair, this really doesn't match the texture, and making it a little bigger and higher on my head. I am still trying to figure out the best way to slick edges and make them last for the whole day (FYI: I am using Eco styler gel).  I am still moisturising and sealing my ends. During weeks 3 and 4, I will be doing a co-wash with Aussie Moist once a week.

Up close of the edges.

For week 5, I really don't want to go back to the wig...thinking about some crochet braids. Actually, hoping that my income tax comes through and I can get some box braids put in.

Until next week...

What A Weekend!

Hey There! This weekend was a great! Let's see where to start...a bachelorette party, boat ride, soul train line, motion sickness, dinner with my best friend, and spending time with the family! Whew!

There are very few times when things actually fall into place perfectly for me when it comes to going out on the town. I actually stepped outside of my comfort zone and tried some things that I normally wouldn't do, such as, cream eyeliner, an exotic hairstyle and believe it or not, a super short dress (despite my recent discovery of cottage cheese on my booty and upper thighs). .

First up, the cream eyeliner.

Some of you may not know this, but I'm currently obsessed with all things YouTube. After watching several videos, I decided to take the plunge and buy some cream eyeliner. Now, I have been a liquid liner girl, exclusively, for over 10 years now. I have super oily eyelids and pencil liner disappears before I walk out the door. While browsing through Target, I came across ELF's cream eyeliner for $3.00.

I had seen this on several tutorials and decided to give it a try. After examining the package and the brush that came with it, I also brought a eyeliner brush. I applied this eyeliner after slapping on some purple eyeshadow by Flirt. Of course a broad was running late. To my surprise, it was super easy to apply and went on like black velvet. I was shocked! I wasn't even trying to be precise, but it just happened that way. I love this eyeliner and would recommend it to anyone.

Next, exotic hair.

Ok, so I have this natural hair, that is currently straight. While looking at one of my favorite YouTubers (is that word?!?) I felt inspired and decided to wear my hair in something different other than a wrap or bouncy curls. I follow, through YouTube and Blog, a lovely woman named Dprincess28. She had a post on 'Date Night' hair and make up. I just used the hair part and for the most part it turned out great! I just wish that I had a camera (and time) so that I could have taken pictures. Anywoo, I used my hot curlers and some Suave hairspray (I know, bad) to set my hair. I left them in for 30 minutes, while I did my make-up and get sugared up for the evening. Next, I remove the hot curlers and parted a third of my hair. I flat twisted the one side of my hair and secured it with some bobby pins. The remaining hair, I pin curled up so that the curls would last longer. It was seriously humid outside. After I took the pin curls out, it was most definitely date worthy hair. Not to mention, it was unique. I just wish that the curls would have stayed in longer.

If you want to know more about the hair style, please check out DPrincess28 blog and YouTube Channel.

Lastly, the dress.

I went to three malls in three days and didn't end up with anything but a shirt from H&M and bill for $48 from dinner at Houlihans. I get so discouraged shopping. I feel like I am at the age where I am too old to be wearing Juniors, but not quite ready to shop at Talbot's, ya feel me. I stumbled into a store called Strawberry and found a really cute dress, that actually fit over all of this booty, hips, and thighs! I was so excited. I didn't know what to do with myself! Oh yeah, I did know. I needed some shoes to go with it. I went to Macy's and what did I find, some Beyonce shoes! I know what you are thinking, Beyonce has shoes at Macy's. No. I call these my Beyonce shoes because I could dance all night long, just like Beyonce (in my mind), and they were super cute.

I know! This post is nothing without pictures! I promise you guys, that I am working on getting a camera, and a webcam so that I can up my blogging status.

It felt so good for a night to go right for the first time and taking some steps outside the box.

Enough. Back to work in the morning. Sigh.
